WHAT IS ABU SIMBEL?
Abu Simbel consists of two monumental rock-cut temples commissioned by Pharaoh Ramses II during the 13th century BCE.
The larger temple was dedicated to:
- Amun-Ra
- Ra-Horakhty
- Ptah
- Ramses II himself
The smaller temple was dedicated to:
- Queen Nefertari
- The goddess Hathor
Together they represent one of the greatest achievements of ancient Egyptian engineering and artistic ambition.
The Colossal Statues
The façade of the Great Temple is dominated by four seated statues of Ramses II.
Each stands approximately 20 meters high.
Their scale alone creates one of the most dramatic sights in Egypt.
Unlike many temples where grandeur unfolds gradually, Abu Simbel overwhelms visitors immediately upon arrival.
The Interior Chambers
Inside, massive pillars carved as Osiride figures lead visitors deeper into the temple.
