Abu Simbel From a Nile Cruise

Can you visit Abu Simbel during a Nile cruise? Absolutely. Discover how the excursion works, whether it is worth it, how much time it takes, and why many travelers consider Abu Simbel the highlight of their entire Egypt journey.

overview

Preparing for a journey to Egypt is exciting, but one question inevitably arises: “What should I pack for Egypt?” The answer depends on several factors, including: • the season of travel, • the destinations you plan to visit, • your travel style, • and whether your itinerary includes experiences such as a Luxury Nile Cruise, desert excursions, or extensive sightseeing. Egypt is generally a relaxed destination for visitors, but thoughtful packing will significantly improve your comfort and enjoyment throughout the journey. From the bustling streets of Cairo to the temples of Luxor, the islands of Aswan, and the desert landscapes of Siwa Oasis, travelers encounter a variety of climates and environments. This guide explains exactly what to bring—and what you can leave at home.

WHAT IS ABU SIMBEL?

Abu Simbel consists of two monumental rock-cut temples commissioned by Pharaoh Ramses II during the 13th century BCE.

The larger temple was dedicated to:

  • Amun-Ra
  • Ra-Horakhty
  • Ptah
  • Ramses II himself

The smaller temple was dedicated to:

  • Queen Nefertari
  • The goddess Hathor

Together they represent one of the greatest achievements of ancient Egyptian engineering and artistic ambition.

The Colossal Statues

The façade of the Great Temple is dominated by four seated statues of Ramses II.

Each stands approximately 20 meters high.

Their scale alone creates one of the most dramatic sights in Egypt.

Unlike many temples where grandeur unfolds gradually, Abu Simbel overwhelms visitors immediately upon arrival.

The Interior Chambers

Inside, massive pillars carved as Osiride figures lead visitors deeper into the temple.

Walls are covered with scenes depicting:

  • Military victories
  • Religious ceremonies
  • Royal achievements

The quality of preservation remains remarkable.

The Temple of Nefertari

The smaller temple is equally significant.

It is one of the few ancient Egyptian temples dedicated to a queen on nearly equal terms with a pharaoh.

Its elegant façade and refined decoration make it one of Egypt’s most beautiful monuments.

THE GREAT RESCUE OF ABU SIMBEL

One of the most fascinating aspects of Abu Simbel is that the temples are no longer located in their original position. When the Aswan High Dam (/attractions/aswan-high-dam) was constructed during the 1960s, the rising waters of Lake Nasser threatened to submerge the temples forever. An unprecedented international rescue effort led by UNESCO dismantled the temples block by block. The entire complex was relocated to higher ground. The project remains one of the greatest archaeological preservation achievements in history.

IS ABU SIMBEL INCLUDED IN A NILE CRUISE?

This depends on the specific itinerary.

Most Nile cruises do not automatically include Abu Simbel.

Instead, it is typically offered as an optional excursion from Aswan (/destinations/aswan).

This approach allows travelers to decide whether they wish to add the experience.

Many luxury tour operators, however, include Abu Simbel as part of premium or tailor-made itineraries

WHAT TIME DOES THE EXCURSION START?

Most Abu Simbel excursions begin early in the morning.

This schedule offers several advantages:

✔ Cooler temperatures

✔ Better photography conditions

✔ Fewer crowds

✔ Return to Aswan by midday or early afternoon

Early departures may seem demanding, but most visitors agree they are worthwhile.

HOW LONG DO YOU NEED AT ABU SIMBEL?

Most visits last:

2–3 Hours

This provides sufficient time to:

  • Explore both temples
  • Photograph the site
  • Learn the history
  • Appreciate the setting

With a private Egyptologist guide, the experience becomes significantly more rewarding.
